Carpet Rolling

I've always found it intriguing and slightly humorous when I would see kids rolling around on the carpet at school during independent work time. If you ask any elementary teacher about "carpet rollers" they all know what I'm talking about. Sam has taken carpet rolling to a whole new level during home school. These are the days of our lives...

Halfway to 20

It feels like she was born yesterday, yet she’s halfway to 20! Happy birthday, Laura!

Cheerleaders

I’ve decided to run a marathon this fall and the training miles are piling up quickly. Today I had a 15 miler to do in 93% humidity, While sweating like crazy on the Neal Smith Trail, I was passed by a grandma and grandpa that seemed to be on a leisurely bike ride together. A little while later as I was going up a steep, winding hill the grandma and grandpa were at the top of the hill clapping and cheering for me. I still get the cry ball just thinking about it.

On top of that, my friend Kirsten dropped off a surprise goody bag with energy chews at my door today knowing I have many long Sunday runs in my future.

In our world of uncertainty one thing I know for sure is the good outweighs the bad.

Talk about beautiful people. ❤️

Mom’s Getaway

What do 4 moms do with 5 days, no kids, and a minivan full of Egyptian snacks?

We run...

We sing with the clown band...

We help others in need...

Except if you knock on our door at 11pm, we won't help you then...

We laugh...

We sip...

We watch chick flicks...

Shine on!

Florida

We are a family that needs regular doses of sunshine and come February everyone gets cranky and our pale faces start to develop a permascowl which doesn’t look cute on anyone.

In an attempt to wipe the permascowls from our faces, we ventured to Fort Myer’s Beach, Florida where the sand looks and feels like flour and the median age of the residents is 71. The weather made me feel like it was mid-June. I kept expecting to see GG’s strawberry pizza dessert in the refrigerator!

The kids' favorite part was the Wave Runner Dolphin Tour. Our tour guide, Shawn, was the stereotypically beach boy/45+man with tan, leathered skin, long beach wavy hair, zinc oxide on his nose, and stood up on the jet skis for the entire two hour long tour. I kept wanting to tell him to "hang ten" or how "stoked" I was to be at the beach, but I had a feeling the mom coolness would somehow just sound weird and awkward so I refrained. We did see dolphins right away and the ocean spray of salt water kept reminding me of a salt blocks they’d sell at Super Value for livestock. Crazy connections??

I had to go to the bathroom while shopping at the grocery store for art supplies (Laura felt inspired to sketch). I asked Laura and Sam to wait for me outside the bathroom and I'd be right back. They had the sneaky plan to hide near the water fountain and jump out at me with a “BOO” when I left the bathroom. The joke was on them when a little old lady with a major case of osteoporosis walked out of the bathroom right before me. The look on Sam’s face was priceless and I’m pretty sure that lady hadn’t laughed like that since Johnny Carson was on TV. They say laughter is the best medicine and great-grandma did look a little taller when I saw her again by the colored pencils.

Life on the beach is easy. Starting your day running on the beach, then reading a book, playing catch, sketching, and building a sand castle is pretty sweet winter getaway.

It’s back to the snow pants, boot warmers, and face masks for the last blows of winter. If you see me scowling, just remind me that I have sun kissed skin under my snow mobile suit and spring is just around the corner.

Laura’s Owl Themed 9th Birthday

After years of planning Laura’s birthday parties, this year I put the party planning in her court. She did a great job and it was cute how she took pieces from her previous parties to weave together her own plan. Laura invented  an Owl and the Hunter tag game which required the party goers to be chased by Eric (a party staple at our house), a talon drop which was inspired from her Rapunzel birthday party, canvas shoe decorating, and a scavenger hunt. She requested Eric have two costumes changes this year as a hunter with a mustache and a mouse. As always, Eric obliged.

I think it’s the 4-H in me that craves a good home spun party and now Laura seems to crave it too. Next year we might need to break out the dice game!
